The Hockey Tree – David Ward

The Hockey Tree tells a story of a pick up hockey game on an outdoor rink.  I enjoyed Brian Deines bright and realistic paintings and the protrayal of a strong and happy family.  I am drawn particularly to the vibrant sister of the main character.  The depiction of a female hockey player, even as a secondary character, lifts the story from ordinary to important as part of a school library collection.  A great fit for a unit on winter, sports, family and prairie life. A Willow Award book by David Ward.
