Two Paris of Shoes – Ester Sanderson

“Two Pairs of Shoes” is not about shoes.  Well, on one hand it is about shoes and on the other it is about culture as represented by shoes.  Maggie is having her eighth birthday.  She has been hoping for a pair of black patent leather shoes from the store.  Her day is full of surprises, one from her mother and one from her grandmother.  Esther Sanderson captures the excitement of birthday and the heart-felt wishes of Maggie.  She shares a piece of the complicated nature of living in two cultures.  David Beyer’s illustrations are fluid and full of emotion.  Thematic links to family, birthday, culture, First Nations (Cree).
