Emily is angry when she goes out to play in the yard during the winter. Her father won’t come out and play with her. She makes a dinosaur to attract her father’s attention and puts her anger into her play. When things get big and scary, her father helps her to come to terms with her feelings. Rachna Gilmore provides a realistic setting and circumstance. It is a good change to see a single father and daughter family. This story would make a good introduction to unit on feelings and dealing with anger and a helpful companion to Molly Bang’s Sophie gets very very angry. It offers possibilities for exploring family relationships and family composition as well as potential for writing instruction on where ideas come from, using repetition, the relationship between text, use of font colour and illustrations.
