the alphabet tree – Leo Lionni

High on a tree are the letters of the alphabet.  A wind comes along and blows some of the letters away, the other letters are frightened by the wind and go deep into the foliage to huddle together.  A patient spelling bee teaches the letters to band together and form words.  The words are strong together and can withstand the wind.  A caterpillar comes along and teaches the words to make sentences.  They are delighted.  The caterpillar insists on them saying something important.  The words form a sentence of great importance and the caterpillar asks them to come on a trip with him.
