Tico and the Golden Wings – Leo Lionni

Tico the bird, was born without wings.  He had one dream to become a bird with golden wings.  One night his wish is granted.  The other birds who had been his friends are jealous of his new wings, they believe he will think he is better than they are because he is different.  Tico flies away.  He discovers when he gives away his golden wing feathers, he grows new black ones in their place.  He delights in giving away his golden feathers to people in need.  When he has given all of his feathers away he returns to his flock.  He wonders if they will accept him.  They welcome him back thinking he is now just like them.  He thinks he is still different because of his experiences and memories.
