Shivers and Shakes by David A. Poulsen

There are some people who may like this book but I’m not one of them.  Shivers and Shakes is the sixth book from the “Salt and Pepper Chronicles”.  David Poulsen has been nominated for a variety of awards with previous books in this series including the Silver Birch in 2008 and the Golden Eagle in 2008.  Both of these are nominations for reader’s choice awards in Canada.  Billed as a book for reluctant readers and Goosebumps addicts, it is intended to be an adventure packed with humour.  I just didn’t find it funny.  I found the characters annoying and the sibling rivalry predictable.  Perhaps I got off on the wrong foot when Poulsen had one of the girls use ‘hunk’ to describe a good looking young man.  “Hunk” is definitely 80’s vocabulary so unless it’s on a resurgence, which it could be, it just made me look to see when the publishing date was.  Not something I’d be spending money for my K-8 library.  I would be interested in checking out books #1 and #3 from this series as they were the award winners, maybe they are what this one is not.
